 Go Green. Help Prevent Cancer

    By GreenGirls

A Variety of different factors can cause Cancer. Some of these factors can be controlled. Choosing the right health behaviors and preventing certain environmental exposures can help prevent the development of cancer. By following the national trends data from the U.S. National Cancer Institute along with some Green guidelines, we can help to prevent cancer.

Stop smoking.

Avoiding tobacco use is the single most important step we can take to reduce the cancer burden.  Not only does it cause about 30% of U.S. deaths, it also has massive environmental problems associated with tobacco growing. Tobacco growing is immensely destructive to the world’s forests. Tobacco companies mostly grow in the developing world, where huge amounts of trees are being cleared to allow for plantations to expand. It’s been estimated that 600 million trees a year are cut just to provide fuel for the fires to dry tobacco leaves. One of every eight trees is cut down to facilitate tobacco production worldwide.

Yes, going green is the new trend, and with that, big tobacco companies are out to get the coveted eco smoker market. Early this year Tobacco companies promoted roll your own cigarettes as a more eco friendly, cleaner alternative to regular smokes. Don't be fooled. When in fact, roll your own cigarettes were recently found to have more chemicals than regular cigarettes.

There is no green cigarette. If you care about your health and the planet, then quit. You’ll be doing yourself and the world a favor if you do.

For the non smokers, stay away from second hand smoke. At least 250 chemicals in second hand smoke are known to be toxic and/or cancer causing agents. There is no risk-free level of exposure to SHS.  It's all or nothing.

What's on your plate?

Maintaining a healthy weight and eating a moderate-fat diet and enough fruits and vegetables while limiting consumption of red meat and avoiding too much alcohol is also an important step in reducing cancer risk.  Some people have gone vegetarian not just for the environment but also for their health.  Like myself.  It has been 3 months and counting since I've had red meat. My reason was initially due to cruelty to animals, but I am finding so much more benefits to going veg. Like my health.

According to the NCI limited fruit and vegetable consumption is a cancer risk. A diet high in fruits and vegetables helps to reduce calorie intake and may help to control weight. A diet high in organic fruits and vegetables helps to reduce health risks. Many EPA-approved pesticides were registered long before extensive research linked these chemicals to cancer and other diseases. Now, the EPA considers 60% of all herbicides (weed killers), 90% of all fungicides (mold killers), and 30% of all insecticides (insect killers) as potentially cancer causing.

Limiting fat & alcohol intake also reduces cancer risk.

Move your body.

As an alternative to driving, grab your bike and peddle away.  Not only does it help offset your carbon emission, but you save gas money, & most importantly, you minimize your cancer risk by being physically active.  Study show that Obesity and physical inactivity cause about 25–30 percent of several of the major cancers in the U.S., including colon, breast, endometrial, kidney, and esophageal cancers. Obesity is estimated to cause 14 percent of cancer deaths in men and 20 percent of cancer deaths in women.

Protecting your skin from sunlight also reduces risk of melanoma skin cancer.  Here are some organic sunscreens.

A healthy way of life is a personal choice. Going green is just another method towards that goal.  Making these changes in your daily habits is not just beneficial to the world but also for you & your family's health.
